Peseiro leaves post as Venezuela head coach

Aug 21, 2021

Caracas(Venezuela), August 21: Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro has resigned as manager of Venezuela's national team for financial reasons, the South American country's football federation said on Friday.
The announcement came less than two weeks before the start of a triple matchday of South American World Cup qualifiers in which Venezuela will face Argentina, Peru and Paraguay in eight days.
"Yesterday we received a letter from Jose Peseiro in which he terminated his contract," Venezuelan Football Federation (FVF) president Jorge Gimenez told reporters. "We spoke with him last night and explained to him that it was difficult for us to understand his position ... because we have a triple-header."
Gimenez confirmed Peseiro had cited late salary payments for his decision, saying the 61-year-old had not been paid for a year.
Peseiro, who took charge of the Vinotinto in February 2020, published the resignation letter on his Twitter account, describing the situation as "unsustainable".
According to Gimenez, the FVF already has a shortlist of candidates to fill the vacant position.
"I can assure you that we are going to appoint someone who has a commitment to the federation and to the entire country," he added.
Venezuela is currently ninth in the 10-team South American zone qualifying standings with one win from six matches. The top four teams will earn an automatic place at next year's World Cup in Qatar while the fifth-ranked side will advance to an intercontinental playoff.
